As early as 1820 Pont-Aven has been painter's heaven .
The glazing sunlight and rich landscape of the region deeply influenced Pont-Aven's role as an artist colony during the XVIIIth and XIXth centuries .Today about 30 to 40 painters workshops and 15 galleries are open every day of the year.
Art-lovers will need more than a few days to enjoy this lovely town that boasts a remarkable community of painters.

The Pont-Aven Museum presents a minimun of three restrospectives exhibitions yearly. 2003 was a tribute to Gauguin ; 2002 was the year of Asselin, Sidaner and Henry Waroquier, artists that either spent time or lived in
Pont-Aven. 2007 current exhibition includes the works of Gonzales and Boulard.

 

The many watermills that lined the Aven river banks provided the economy of the town and the port was a major commercial access to the South of France wines that were stored in Pont- Aven before distribution by sea.
French was the spoken language in Pont-Aven and until World War II, the gentry of the Breton big cities liked coming there to have fun away from slanderous looks.
 

The cookies of Pont-Aven are the pride and joy of Breton pastry-making and the famous 'Traou-mad" ,a thick, and round biscuit made of sablé pastry is internationally known and appreciated.
The recipe has remained exactly the same since the beginning of its making.
So famous are these cookies that a movie called "Les galettes de Pont-Aven" was shot staring Philippe Noiret in Pont-Aven!

Pont-Aven is rich in tradition and hosts "Les Fleurs d'Ajoncs" festival established by Théodore Botrel in July, 1905. Every summer, traditional dancing in period costumes takes over the streets of Pont-Aven before electing the Queen of the Fleurs d'Ajoncs and her two bridesmaids.
